Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out a return to Tottenham Hotspur, branding the speculation “not realistic” amid the club’s search for a new head coach following Ange Postecoglou’s shock dismissal.

Pochettino, now managing the United States national team, addressed rumours linking him to the vacant Spurs role after their recent 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey. The Argentinian dismissed the links, insisting he is fully committed to the USMNT ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“After I left in 2019, every time I was free and Tottenham needed a manager, my name was mentioned,” Pochettino said. “But today, it’s not real. It’s not realistic.”

Tottenham’s Search Continues After Europa League Glory and Postecoglou Exit

Tottenham are actively searching for a new head coach just over two weeks after winning the Europa League, ending a 17-year trophy drought. Postecoglou’s abrupt sacking has reportedly caused unrest within the dressing room, with several players said to be unhappy with the decision.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank is currently the frontrunner to take over at Spurs, with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, Fulham’s Marco Silva, and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola also being considered. Technical director Johan Lange, who previously worked with Frank in Denmark, is leading the recruitment process.

Despite fans’ nostalgic calls for a reunion, Pochettino reaffirmed his ties to Spurs but stressed the timing is wrong:

“We talk about it because it’s my club, like Newell’s or Espanyol. But I have responsibilities here [with the US].”

What’s Next for Tottenham?

While Mauricio Pochettino is out of the picture, Tottenham are expected to finalise a shortlist soon. With Thomas Frank emerging as the preferred option, the club may have to negotiate a significant compensation package with Brentford to secure his services.

Spurs’ decision to part ways with Postecoglou has left the football world stunned, especially after his recent success in Europe. However, Daniel Levy appears determined to move forward with a fresh vision for the club.
