Former Chelsea captain John Terry has hinted at the reasoning behind Chelsea’s preference for Liam Delap over Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen in their ongoing transfer plans.
According to report, Chelsea were initially interested in bringing Osimhen to Stamford Bridge after his impressive loan spell at Galatasaray. However, the club is now exploring more financially viable and youth-focused alternatives like Delap.
Terry, speaking to TalkSPORTS as cited by Football London, praised Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson and revealed the kind of striker the club is prioritising.
“When I watch him play, he’s only one of a handful of strikers in the league that plays on the shoulder. As a defender, that’s a nightmare — it opens up space. I like Nico,” Terry said.
While Osimhen netted 26 league goals and 37 across all competitions in Turkey, Chelsea reportedly hesitated due to his high wage demands. Despite being ready to meet his €70 million release clause, the club’s owners are wary of committing to players nearing 30 with expensive contracts.
Terry echoed this sentiment, indicating a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy:
“Usually that’s an experienced player, but the owners are clear — they don’t want to bring in someone of 29, 30 years of age on big money. It’s a different model. I personally feel we need that.”
Liam Delap, meanwhile, offers a cost-effective, Premier League-ready alternative. The 22-year-old scored 12 goals for Ipswich Town in 37 appearances despite their relegation, making him a practical fit for Chelsea’s evolving approach to squad building.
Though Terry did not name Delap or Osimhen specifically, his remarks support the club’s decision to pursue a younger, domestically proven option. As Chelsea eyes a long-term project, Delap’s age, price tag, and league experience give him an edge in the club’s summer plans.
