Todd Boehly’s arrival to Chelsea has seen the introduction of a clause that may well lead to a mass exodus in the summer transfer window if the Blues fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The Telegraph reported that most players signed in the past two transfer windows agreed to defer 25% of their wages should they not participate in Europe’s premier club competition.
This could mean an incredible 13-player clear-out at Stamford Bridge this summer, as Roman Abramovich had previously guaranteed outward deals from Chelsea would have their wages paid regardless.
Chelsea currently sit 10th in the league and 11 points off qualifying places, making the Champions League their best bet for qualification for 2021/22.
If successful, however, many of those players involved could see a resurgence and remain with The Blues’ setup long-term.
