The recent Super Eagles snub seem not to affect Taiwo Awoniyi’s impressive form as he added to his goals tally on Saturday, netting in the Berlin Derby to help his side seal a huge win over fellow Berliners, Hertha Berlin.
The Super Eagles striker drew the first blood in the intense derby matchup as early as five minutes into the game, sweeping home his eighth goal of the current Bundesliga campaign.
The hosts raced to a two-goal lead before the break, when Christopher Trimmel added to Awoniyi’s early goal in the half hour mark.
At the end of the tie, goals from the Super Eagles star, Awoniyi and Austrian defender, Trimmel was all Urs Fischer’s men needed to compound the woes of their city rival, Hertha Berlin.
The win, which was Union Berlin’s third win against Hertha after nine meetings, ensured that they maintained the closeness with Bayer Leverkusen on the log.
Bayer Leverkusen are fourth with twenty-one points, one point ahead of fifth placed Union Berlin.
