Super Eagles’ Taiwo Awoniyi scored Union Berlin’s match winning goal in their 3-1 defeat of ten man Mainz on Saturday.

The Nigerian international, who was making his 20th appearance for Berlin, was too hot to handle by Mainz defenders as he scored his first goal in 2022 and 9th league goal of the season.

Goals from Genki Haraguchi and Sheraldo Becker gave the hosts a deserved advantage, having shown class from the kick off.

With the scoreline at 2-0 in favour of the Iron Ones, Awoniyi came off the bench and slot into the bottom corner an exquisite square play from Becker with fifteen minutes left to play.

However, the visitors got their consolation goal in the 90th minute through Delano Burgzorg.

The victory sees the Berliners climb up to the seventh place with 37 points, leapfrogging Mainz in the process and are now level on points with sixth placed RB Leipzig who are with a game in hand.
