The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Augustine Eguavoen as the interim coach of the Nigeria national team.

This marks Eguavoen’s fourth time managing the national team, and his appointment comes shortly after the departure of former coach Jose Peseiro due to contract expiration.

Eguavoen’s previous stints as the caretaker coach of the Nigeria national team include his appointment in June 2005, where he was joined by coaching staff members Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi, and Ike Shorunmu.

Under his guidance, the team achieved success at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, securing a bronze medal after defeating Senegal in the third-place play-off. However, he was subsequently dismissed in April 2006.

In June 2010, the Nigeria Football Federation called upon Eguavoen to replace Swedish coach Lars Lagerbäck on a temporary basis.

Despite his caretaker role, Eguavoen made it clear that he had no intention of applying for the position permanently.

Additionally, he took charge of the Nigeria national under-23 football team in August 2010, aiming to secure qualification for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Unfortunately, the team was eliminated in the group stage, leading to Eguavoen’s resignation in December 2011.

On December 12, 2021, Eguavoen was once again appointed as the interim manager of Nigeria for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations following the departure of Gernot Rohr.

However, after Nigeria’s exit from the round of sixteen with a heartbreaking loss to Tunisia, Eguavoen resumed his role as the Technical Director of the team.

As Eguavoen takes charge of the Nigeria national team once again, fans and supporters will be eager to see how his experience and leadership will shape the team’s performance in future tournaments.
