Arsenal have received a positive update on the fitness of defender Riccardo Calafiori after a minor injury scare during Italy’s 3-1 UEFA Nations League victory over France.
The Gunners signed the 22-year-old from Bologna for £42m in the summer, but he has yet to start a Premier League game, only featuring as a substitute against Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Calafiori was forced off in the 71st minute after sustaining a contact injury when teammate Alessandro Bastoni made a challenge on France’s Ousmane Dembele.
Despite initial concerns, Italy manager Luciano Spalletti downplayed the severity of the injury, indicating there’s a good chance Calafiori will be fit for Italy’s next match against Israel.
This news comes as a relief for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, especially after the long-term injury suffered by Jurrien Timber shortly after his arrival in 2023.
With a busy schedule ahead, including a North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on September 15, as well as key matches against Atalanta BC in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League, Calafiori’s availability will be crucial.
Arsenal will also face Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup and Leicester City in the Premier League before the end of September, making Calafiori’s fitness a key factor in their upcoming campaign.
