Ansu Fati finally got a rare chance on the pitch during Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, thanks to a decision by manager Hansi Flick. The 22-year-old winger returned to action after spending over three months without playing.
According to 90min, Flick didn’t make the substitution out of necessity. He rewarded Fati for his persistence and effort during training sessions, even though the young forward has only featured in nine matches this season.
“For Ansu, it’s important to have minutes,” Flick said. “I don’t give away minutes. He deserved to play today based on the way he’s training.”
Fati chose to stay in January, hoping to prove his worth instead of leaving on loan. He pushed through limited opportunities and continued to work hard despite his reduced role.
Recent reports say he now sees a summer transfer as the most realistic path forward. Barcelona wants to reduce its wage bill, and Fati’s £200,000-a-week salary makes him a likely candidate to leave.
Even with that in mind, Flick’s decision to play him—planned before Lamine Yamal asked for a substitution—could give Fati a small window to remind everyone of his quality. Strong performances in the final stretch of the season might help him attract better options when the transfer window opens.
