England midfielder Angel Gomes has completed a transfer to Marseille, turning down approaches from Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham in the process. The 24-year-old, who has earned four senior caps for England over the past year, leaves Lille after a four-year stint in Ligue 1.
According to a report from ShotsTV.com, both Tottenham and West Ham had opened talks with Gomes regarding a return to the Premier League, but the former Manchester United youngster has chosen to continue his career in France.
Gomes will join a Marseille side that finished second in Ligue 1 behind Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, with the club preparing for another European campaign.
“After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, it’s time for me to say goodbye. This club has been more than just a team — it’s been a family, a home, and a place that has shaped me both on and off the pitch,” Gomes wrote on Instagram.
Having spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Boavista, Gomes became a regular at Lille and earned international recognition for his creative midfield performances, despite not registering goals or assists for the national side.
Now set to feature under Marseille’s project, the move signals a new chapter for the midfielder, whose technical control and vision continue to gain attention across Europe.
Neither Tottenham nor West Ham are expected to revive interest, with both clubs now pursuing alternative midfield targets ahead of the new season.
