Anderlecht Join Race for Nigerian Defender Jordan Torunarigha

RSC Anderlecht are the latest club expressing strong interest in Super Eagles defender Jordan Torunarigha, as the experienced centre-back edges closer to the end of his contract with KAA Gent.

The 27-year-old has declined multiple extension offers from Gent, increasing speculation about a summer move. According to report, the Belgian side is now competing with clubs like Olympique Marseille and Borussia Mönchengladbach for the defender’s signature.

With veteran players Jan Vertonghen and Adryelson set to leave, Anderlecht are urgently searching for defensive reinforcements. While younger talents like Lucas Hey and Jan-Carlo Simic offer promise, the club needs an experienced leader to guide the backline through a potential title challenge.

Torunarigha joined Gent from Hertha Berlin in 2022 and has since made 98 league appearances. Known for his strength in aerial duels, solid tackling, and calmness under pressure, the German-born Nigerian has become a mainstay in the Belgian Pro League.

“He has had a very difficult period,” admitted Gent head coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck, reflecting on the player’s recent months amid increased transfer attention from the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1.

Marseille, pushing for a Champions League spot, view the Nigerian international as a solution to their defensive struggles. Despite their attacking success, the French club has one of the worst defensive records in Ligue 1’s top eight.

Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Leeds United, along with Serie A club Torino and Bundesliga outfit TSG Hoffenheim, are also reportedly keeping tabs on Torunarigha as he prepares to become a free agent.

On the international front, Torunarigha debuted for Nigeria in October 2023 against Mozambique. He featured in the World Cup qualifiers earlier this year but was left out of the squad for the upcoming Unity Cup and friendly against Russia, as head coach Eric Chelle reshapes his options.
