Genk forward Paul Onuachu is set to miss out on African Cup of Nations, after picking up an hamstring injury in Genk’s 1-1 draw against Royal Antwerp.
The former Midtjylland star scored his 12th league goal of the season in the clash, but was walked off the pitch with the aid of team medical in the 71st minute.
The injury is expected to keep him out for three to four weeks, which all but rules him out of the African Cup of Nations starting on January 9 in Cameroon.
Onuachu’s injury is a massive blow for Nigeria and the interim manager Augustine Eguavoen, who replaced Gernot Rohr this month ahead of the competition in Cameroon.
The Super Eagles are already without Watford star Oghenekaro Etebo, Kingsley Michael, while Napoli forward Victor Osimhen is currently a doubt for AFCON.
The Genk star would have been one of the players to replace the injured Osimhen in attack for Eagles, but with his latest injury it means Eguavoen would turn to the likes of Emmanuel Dennis and Taiwo Awoniyi as we edge closer to the tournament.
