Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced plans to immortalise the late Nigerian football icon, Christian Chukwu, who was laid to rest on August 16 in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West — www.isagoal.com reports.
Daily Trust noted that the governor praised Chukwu as more than a sportsman, describing him as a national treasure whose influence stretched beyond the pitch.
Mbah, in his emotional speech, reflected on the former Green Eagles captain with moving words.
“When I learned of his death, it felt as though a part of our collective spirit had left us,” he said.
He recalled how Chukwu inspired unity during difficult times, leading with quiet strength and unwavering dignity.
The governor stressed that Chukwu was not just a defender or captain, but “a proud son of Enugu, an icon of Igboland, and a symbol of service with humility.”
Mbah added that the late Rangers legend embodied sacrifice, discipline, and leadership that motivated generations.
As part of the honour, the governor declared that jersey number 5, worn by Chukwu during his years with Enugu Rangers, will be permanently retired.
