The recent announcement by FIFA to include Inter Miami in the upcoming Club World Cup has ignited a significant backlash within Major League Soccer.
FIFA president, Gianni Infantino declared on Sunday that Miami would be one of the 32 teams competing in the tournament, which is set to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13, 2025.
The team qualified by winning the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular season record, amassing 74 points.
Infantino celebrated the decision in Fort Lauderdale after Miami’s victory over New England Revolution, stating, “Congratulations, you are the best team of the season in America.”
He also announced that Miami will host the tournament’s opening match at Hard Rock Stadium.
However, this decision has sparked criticism from other MLS teams, who accuse FIFA of favoritism toward Beckham’s franchise.
Fans have also expressed frustration over the perceived lack of transparency in the selection process, arguing that the move seems designed to feature Messi and boost the tournament’s appeal.
One fan remarked, “The criteria was always the same. Whichever team had Lionel Messi was gonna qualify,” while others pointed out that even a poor season for Miami wouldn’t have hindered their selection.
