Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has been banned for two matches by FIFA.

This decision was confirmed by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Saturday.

The Aston Villa star was found guilty of violating FIFA’s code of conduct due to two separate incidents.

The first violation occurred after Argentina‘s World Cup qualifier victory over Chile on September 5, when Martínez held a replica of the Copa América trophy to his groin, mimicking an erect penis.

This behavior is not new for Martínez; he previously performed a similar act with the Golden Glove trophy after Argentina’s victory over France in the 2022 World Cup final.

Additionally, FIFA sanctioned Martínez for hitting a TV cameraman’s equipment with his gloves following Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Colombia on September 10, further violating principles of fair play.

In response to the ruling, the AFA expressed strong disagreement with FIFA’s decision, stating, “the Argentine Football Association expresses its absolute disagreement with the decision taken by the FIFA disciplinary committee.”

Due to the ban, Martínez will miss upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on October 10 and Bolivia on October 15.
