Xabi Alonso has yet to officially begin his tenure as Real Madrid’s next manager, but he may already be dealing with two major disappointments in the transfer market. According to a report by Football España, both of Alonso’s top midfield targets—Martín Zubimendi and Florian Wirtz—are close to joining rival clubs.
Zubimendi, widely regarded for his composure and tactical awareness at Real Sociedad, appeared to be a foundational piece for Alonso’s vision at Madrid. However, Arsenal are reportedly leading the race for the Spanish international. The London club has moved decisively, with a verbal agreement already in place. His €60 million release clause was seen as a fair price for Madrid, but they now appear to be trailing behind in negotiations.
Florian Wirtz, the German playmaker admired across Europe, is also slipping through Madrid’s grasp. Bayern Munich have been actively working on the deal, and sources suggest Wirtz has agreed to a five-year contract with the Bundesliga champions. The offer reportedly includes a salary package worth between €20–25 million per season. “He recently hinted at wanting a new challenge, and Bayern’s proposal appears too strong to turn down,” the report noted.
With both midfielders likely unavailable, Alonso may be forced to move quickly to identify new targets—especially with Toni Kroos expected to leave a considerable gap in Madrid’s midfield. While the situation is far from ideal, time remains for adjustments ahead of the upcoming season.
