Real Madrid have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on a contract running until 2028.
According to Sky Sports, Alonso steps into the role following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, who managed his final game on Saturday and is set to take charge of the Brazil national team.
The 43-year-old former midfielder, who made 236 appearances for Real Madrid during his playing career, leaves Bayer Leverkusen after two and a half impressive seasons in charge. Alonso led the German side to a domestic double in the 2024/25 campaign and narrowly missed out on an unbeaten treble after a loss to Atalanta in the Europa League final.
Alonso will be officially unveiled at a presentation in Madrid on Monday, where he is expected to speak to the press. He will begin his role on June 1, ahead of the Club World Cup set to take place in the United States next month.
In a statement, Real Madrid said: “Xabi Alonso is one of the greatest legends of Real Madrid and world football. He wore our shirt in 236 official matches between 2009 and 2014. During that time he won six titles: the 10th European Cup in Lisbon, one European Super Cup, one LaLiga title, two Copa del Rey titles and one Spanish Super Cup.”
Alonso also enjoyed a decorated international career, winning the World Cup in 2010 and back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012 with Spain. He earned 113 caps for his country before retiring.
His coaching journey began with Real Madrid’s youth setup, where he managed the U14 A team during the 2018–2019 season and won both the league and champions tournament. He later moved to Real Sociedad B before making his mark at Leverkusen.
Now back at the Santiago Bernabéu, Alonso is tasked with continuing Real Madrid’s domestic and European dominance, bringing with him fresh ideas and a modern tactical approach built on his Bundesliga success.
