“West Brom’s Loss?” Ex-Eagle Slams Ajayi Exit Decision

Semi Ajayi’s shock move to Hull City gets support from Garba Lawal, who questions West Brom’s decision to let the Super Eagles defender leave

Semi Ajayi’s switch from West Bromwich Albion to Hull City has stirred mixed reactions among Nigerian fans and former internationals – www.isagoal.com reports.

Former Nigerian international Garba Lawal sees the deal as a win for Hull City, while criticizing West Brom’s decision not to renew the defender’s contract, according to Soccernet.ng.

Lawal, who once played in Portugal, called the transfer “a bargain” and questioned why a player of Ajayi’s ability was allowed to leave for free.

The 31-year-old centre-back wrapped up five years at West Brom last month, surprising many observers with his quiet departure.

Now officially a Hull City player, Ajayi signed a two-year contract with the club, with an additional option for a third.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Lawal said: “I honestly do not understand why West Brom did not offer him a new deal. He’s a solid player.”

Lawal also praised Ajayi’s recent performances with the Nigerian national team, calling him “strong and composed” since recovering from injury.

He added, “Semi looked good in the last Super Eagles outing. He’s still got fire in him, and Hull City are lucky to have snapped him up.”

Ajayi now joins the same club where Jay Jay Okocha played in the 2007–08 season, making 18 appearances during his time there.

Hull narrowly escaped relegation last season, and they’ll hope Ajayi adds much-needed experience to their defensive unit.

With 43 Super Eagles caps and 177 games at West Brom, the Nigerian brings solid pedigree, including 13 goals and three assists.

Ajayi also shared his excitement about Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović, who arrived from Dinamo Zagreb this summer after winning a league and cup double.

“He’s pushed us a lot, and obviously he’s a serial winner, so he wants to win, and that’s what he demands from us,” Ajayi said.

The Tigers kick off their EFL Championship campaign away at Coventry on August 9, with expectations building around Ajayi’s impact in the squad.
