The Union of European Footballing Associations (UEFA) has recently unveiled the new format for the Champions League, set to be implemented starting from the 2024-2025 season. This announcement, made through a video by UEFA via Fabrizio Romano, highlights the significant changes that will be introduced to the competition format.
The current 32-team group stage will undergo a transformation, giving way to a single 36-team league phase in the Champions League, as well as the Europa and Europa Conference League.
Under this new format, each team will be drawn against eight different opponents, with two from each of the four seeding pots. They will play four games at home and four away.
The top eight teams that finish first through eighth in the league phase will secure direct qualification for the Round of 16. However, for teams finishing ninth through 24th, an additional knockout playoff round will be introduced.
These teams will face each other to earn a spot alongside the top eight teams in the pre-quarterfinals. Notably, teams that finish 25th to 36th will be eliminated directly from all competitions.
This marks a departure from the previous system, where third-placed group finishers would drop down to the lower European league’s preliminary playoff round.
The new format aims to create a more streamlined and competitive structure for the Champions League, providing teams with greater opportunities to progress in the tournament.
With these changes, UEFA seeks to enhance the excitement and quality of European football at the highest level.
