Trent Alexander-Arnold has paid an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota following Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final, IsaGoal can report.
Although Alexander-Arnold couldn’t attend Jota’s funeral due to his Club World Cup duties with Real Madrid, he made sure to honor his former teammate. “He will never be forgotten,” he said.
“My condolences, my love, my thoughts and prayers to the family of a close friend of mine.”
The England star, who spent five years alongside Jota at Liverpool, described the grief as “very, very difficult” for himself and the wider football world. “Some things are bigger than the game,” he added. “It’s heartbreaking… but the support shown across the football world has been incredible.”
Reflecting on his relationship with Jota, he said: “He was a very close friend. I’ve been around his wife, his amazing kids, his parents—it’s crushing to lose someone like that. He lit up every room. We shared amazing memories. He’ll live forever in our hearts.”
Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died after a car crash in Spain last Thursday.
The funeral service was held in Gondomar, Portugal, attended by Liverpool’s entire squad, including Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, who each carried shirt-shaped floral tributes.
Other mourners included Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, and Joao Moutinho, all of whom flew in from the US after breaking down in tears during a tribute played before their Club World Cup clash.
