Tottenham Hotspur have made a bold start under Thomas Frank by securing their first summer signing in record-breaking fashion, IsaGoal can report.
According to BBC Sport via Fabrizio Romano, the club has reached an agreement to sign 20-year-old centre-back Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale.
Tottenham acted swiftly to bring in Takai, who joins for around £5 million, setting a new record for the highest fee paid for a Japanese player from the J League.
Frank steps in after Ange Postecoglou’s surprise departure, despite Postecoglou leading Spurs to Europa League glory with a win over Manchester United.
Daniel Levy pushed for a fresh direction at the club, placing his trust in Frank to lead Tottenham into the Champions League next season.
“Takai is a great signing,” Romano confirmed, adding that the young defender will join the squad for the 2025/26 season.
The Japan international made his senior debut last year in a World Cup qualifier against China and has already earned four caps.
Takai played 28 times for Kawasaki Frontale last season, scoring twice and quickly becoming one of the most talked-about talents in the J League.
The defender was named the J League’s ‘Best Young Player in 2024’, a title that caught the attention of top European clubs.
Frank is expected to help develop Takai, who will compete for minutes alongside Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, and Radu Dragusin.
Tottenham fans are eager to see if Takai can quickly adapt to English football and make an impact in Frank’s new-look squad next season.
