The Super Falcons of Nigeria have fresh motivation heading into WAFCON 2024, as CAF has doubled the winner’s prize to a record-breaking $1 million, IsaGoal can report.

According to report, CAF has confirmed that this year’s tournament in Morocco will feature a total prize pool of $3.475 million, marking a 45% increase from the last edition.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said, “The improved prize money will contribute to better salaries for women footballers, coaches and staff.”

Nigeria, already the most successful team in the competition’s history with nine titles, hasn’t won since 2018. The Falcons lost in the semifinals in 2022 to hosts Morocco, before finishing fourth.

This year, they’re targeting redemption — and that ₦1.5 billion winner’s purse has only intensified their focus.

Veteran forward Francisca Ordega told the BBC, “Everyone wants this title back. Most of these girls haven’t played in WAFCON before, and they really want to make a name for themselves.”

The team boasts a mix of established names and emerging talent. Ordega believes this balance gives Nigeria a strong edge as they begin their campaign in Group B with matches against Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.

CAF’s updated prize structure means every participating team will earn something, with quarter-finalists getting up to $200,000.

Motsepe added, “We are excited about the substantial increase in fans, broadcast audiences and sponsors.”

With cash, glory, and legacy on the line, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are ready to chase a 10th title — and send a strong message across African football.
