Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has hailed Brentford’s Benjamin Frederick as a defender destined to anchor Nigeria’s backline for years – www.isagoal.com reports.
The 20-year-old stepped into the spotlight when he was drafted late into the squad for the Unity Cup final against Jamaica, as reported by Soccernet.ng.
Thrown straight into a pressure-packed match, the youngster delivered a calm ninety minutes that ended in a 2-2 draw before Nigeria clinched the trophy on penalties.
Troost-Ekong praised both Frederick’s maturity and his work ethic, saying, “Benjamin is a humble, hardworking, very talented defender. We were all impressed.”
The Super Eagles captain also credited forward Moses Simon, who once brought Frederick into his academy before his move to Brentford.
“It’s not easy to come in last minute, win a trophy, and look that composed,” Troost-Ekong added. “This is the kind of story that inspires the team.”
Frederick’s path has been fast and remarkable, from grassroots training in Simon’s academy to the Premier League stage with Brentford.
Coach Eric Chelle and Paris FC star Simon were among others who applauded the defender’s breakout performance.
Now, with World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa looming, Frederick’s rise provides Nigeria with a timely defensive boost.
