Tottenham Hotspur celebrated a hard-fought Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao, but the post-match ceremony left fans puzzled when key players Son Heung-min, Cristian Romero, and Rodrigo Bentancur walked away without medals.
According to FourFourTwo, the issue wasn’t due to an oversight by the players or coaching staff, but a logistical error on UEFA’s part during the medal ceremony.
Tottenham were allocated the standard 50 winners’ medals to distribute among players and staff. However, UEFA only brought 30 medals to the pitch, assuming fewer individuals would take part in the presentation. This led to a shortage at the moment the team was celebrating on stage, leaving several players empty-handed in full view of cameras.
UEFA later issued a statement explaining the mix-up:
“To our great displeasure, we did not have enough medals available on stage during the trophy ceremony presentation due to an unexpected discrepancy in the player count, as more team members – including injured players – participated in the ceremony than initially anticipated.”
The governing body confirmed that the missing medals were delivered to the dressing room immediately after the presentation, along with a formal apology.
Interestingly, players such as Sergio Reguilón, who had not featured in the competition, received medals before some of the team’s key contributors – including Son, who has battled injuries but played a vital role in getting the club to the final.
Tottenham will wrap up their Premier League season against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend, aiming to finish on a high after their European triumph.
