Mohamed Salah has opened up about the tension that once existed between him and former Liverpool teammate Sadio Mané. In an interview with France Football, Salah shared his perspective on their relationship, revealing that while they were professional on the pitch, there were underlying tensions due to their competitive nature and differing ambitions.
Salah admitted that at times, their rivalry was evident, especially with Mané’s Senegal defeating Salah’s Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations. “Yes, there was tension with Sadio,” Salah remarked. “Mind you, we were professional until the end; I don’t think it affected the team.”
Despite the tension, Salah rejected claims that he was “selfish” during their time together at Liverpool. He pointed out that he provided Mané with more assists than anyone else, emphasizing his commitment to the team. Off the field, Salah explained that they were not very close but maintained mutual respect.
Mané’s departure from Liverpool in 2022 and subsequent moves to Bayern Munich and then to the Saudi Pro League marked the end of their partnership. Salah, on the other hand, extended his stay at Anfield, having signed a new contract in April, and is now focused on continuing to help Liverpool succeed.
Reflecting on his contract negotiations, Salah mentioned that there were moments of uncertainty about his future. “It was actually a bit strange, we were really going strong this season, and there was this negotiation that wasn’t easy,” Salah said. “In the end, all’s well that ends well: we’re champions and I’m staying for two more seasons.”
