Arsenal have completed the signing of teenage sensation Marcell Washington, the son of former Chelsea and England star Ryan Bertrand, IsaGoal can report.
The 17-year-old left-back officially joins the Gunners after impressing during a trial spell, having previously come through Chelsea’s youth system.
Washington becomes the latest highly rated youngster to exit Cobham, continuing a trend of talent choosing opportunities elsewhere.
Speaking about his move, Washington said: “It’s been such an honour to have [my dad] take me through clips and walk me through games. He’s really passionate about making me a better player—and probably a better version of him.”
Wearing the No. 55 shirt next season, Washington already has his eyes set on making an impact at the Emirates.
“Arsenal’s a big club that always strives to win trophies,” he said. “I’m just looking to be an addition to that and see what I can offer the club.”
The teenager knows he’ll face stiff competition from the likes of Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly for a place in Mikel Arteta’s side.
Still, Washington believes training alongside such talent will only fast-track his development.
“They’re all great players in and around my position, which is a really good thing,” he noted. “Training with them is a huge opportunity to learn from players with high skill and experience.”
Arteta’s faith in youth, proven by breakout seasons from Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, gives Washington real hope for his future in north London.
