Rob McElhenney picks shocking retro Celtic jersey choice

Here Is The Easy Money-Making Trick Everyone Is Talking About! Learn More Here!

Rob McElhenney, best known for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and co-owner of Wrexham AFC, recently turned heads by wearing a retro Celtic FC jersey during a visit to a vintage football shirt store. The actor was in celebratory spirits after Wrexham secured back-to-back promotions, propelling the Welsh club into the Championship.

According to the Daily Record, McElhenney was browsing football kits at AwayDays when he came across the 2004/05 Celtic home shirt—an iconic design from a season remembered for its dramatic finale. The shirt, sponsored by Carling and featuring the club’s classic green-and-white hoops, is infamous for “Helicopter Sunday,” when Celtic lost the league title on the final day to rivals Rangers.

McElhenney admitted he wasn’t fully aware of the history behind the shirt, but found it appealing due to its Irish connection and bold design. While trying it on, he asked the shop staff about the club’s rivals and whether Celtic were seen as the Catholic team in Scotland.

“Celtic, who are their main rivals? Rangers? Is it like Ireland where one is Catholic and one is Protestant? And which one is this?” he asked, before being told Celtic is often seen as the Catholic side. Laughing, he responded, “I’m good.”

His casual yet curious attitude drew attention online, especially from fans of both Celtic and Rangers, many of whom weighed in on the choice. Despite the shirt’s controversial legacy among supporters, McElhenney appeared more drawn to its look and cultural ties than its footballing past.

The moment added another chapter to the American actor’s growing connection to UK football culture, blending curiosity, humor, and a bit of sporting history.
