On Sunday, Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt officially made the quarter-finals for the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup competition.
The Nigeria Professional Football League title-holders earned a 2-2 draw in their Group B Match Day 5 fixture against Diables Noirs of Congo Brazzaville at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
With this result, they now have 10 points total and lead their group by goal difference ahead of ASEC Mimosas who are tied with the same points but are now ranked second.
Although Diables Noirs aren’t able to progress to the next round, their successful equaliser nine minutes before full-time could be seen as a win in its own right.
Meanwhile, ASEC Mimosas won 2-1 against Motema Pembe which boosts their chances as they head into the final match day on April 2 when they play Rivers United.
Ultimately it is this faceoff between these two teams that will determine who finishes first in the group, with Rivers United needing only a draw to stay on top.
