The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) is investigating a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows referee David Coote making disrespectful remarks about Liverpool and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp.
The video, which surfaced on Monday, was filmed shortly after Coote officiated Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield.
In the video, Coote, alongside another individual, is seen discussing Liverpool, with the 42-year-old referee reportedly using expletives to describe the club and making offensive remarks about Klopp, a Premier League and Champions League-winning manager.
Coote has been a Premier League referee since 2018, having previously officiated in the EFL for eight years.
His decision-making during the Liverpool-Aston Villa match has drawn criticism, particularly for a controversial incident in which Leon Bailey was not penalized for a foul on Mohamed Salah despite being the last man.
Additionally, Villa had three penalty appeals dismissed, including one for a challenge between Ibrahima Konaté and Ollie Watkins, and two others involving Pau Torres in the box.
The video and Coote’s performance during the match have sparked significant debate, prompting PGMOL to launch an investigation.
