In a first for the Premier League, referee Jarred Gillett will wear a camera during the upcoming game between Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
The technology, known as the ‘refcam’, has been approved for use by football’s lawmakers, IFAB, as well as the Premier League refereeing body, PGMOL, and both clubs involved in the match.
However, the Premier League has clarified that Gillett will only wear the camera as part of filming for a one-off short programme promoting match officials.
The footage captured by Gillett’s camera will not be broadcast live but will be shown later in the year as part of a programme aimed at providing further insight and education into the demands of officiating in the Premier League.
This innovative technology has previously been attached to the referee’s chest, but in this instance, Gillett will wear a head-mounted device that connects to the usual officials’ communications system.
This will allow viewers to experience the game from the referee’s perspective, offering a unique and immersive insight into the challenges faced by match officials.
The introduction of the ‘refcam’ in the Premier League marks a significant step forward in enhancing the understanding of referee decision-making and the pressures they face on the pitch.
It also provides an exciting opportunity for fans to gain a deeper appreciation of the game and the role of match officials.
