Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, threatening to derail Liverpool’s hopes of securing Europe’s most sought-after playmaker.
According to the London Standard, the Spanish giants are confident they can snatch Wirtz from Liverpool, with Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Real Madrid manager playing a pivotal role.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder had looked destined for a Premier League move after Manchester City dropped out of the running and Bayern Munich admitted defeat. “Max Eberl [Bayern’s sporting director] informed me that Florian Wirtz is probably leaning towards Liverpool,” Bayern president Herbert Hainer told Abendzeitung.
A transfer for Wirtz is expected to be one of the most expensive in football history. Bayer Leverkusen are demanding around £125 million, and total costs including wages and bonuses could reach £250 million. Liverpool had been in advanced stages of preparing talks with Leverkusen this week.
However, Real Madrid believe they hold a crucial advantage. Xabi Alonso, who transformed Wirtz during his time at Leverkusen, is now at the Bernabéu and could be the deciding factor in the player’s next move.
Reports from Spain claim Alonso’s influence might persuade Wirtz to join him in Madrid rather than head to Anfield. That development leaves the transfer saga wide open, with both clubs set for a critical few weeks of negotiations.
With the summer window approaching, the Florian Wirtz transfer battle is quickly becoming the headline story in European football.
