Real Madrid is facing a serious goalkeeper dilemma ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash with Arsenal.
Thibaut Courtois is already sidelined with an injury, and now Andriy Lunin has joined him on the injury list.
According to Marca, Lunin has a calf issue that could keep him out for several weeks.
But not all hope is lost. The club is still hopeful that Lunin could feature this weekend, potentially with the help of pain-relief injections.
However, playing through the pain could worsen his injury, something Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti definitely wants to avoid.
As for Courtois, he picked up a muscle injury during Belgium’s warm-up ahead of their friendly with Ukraine. He’s already missed a couple of Real Madrid’s matches because of it, including their league tie against Leganes and their Copa del Rey clash against Real Sociedad.
If Lunin can’t go against Valencia, Real Madrid might have to rely on 19-year-old Fran Gonzalez, who has yet to make his senior debut.
Gonzalez has been training with the first team for two years and has impressed for Real Madrid Castilla, earning three clean sheets in 16 appearances this season.
But jumping into a high-profile game with Arsenal could be a massive challenge for such an inexperienced goalkeeper.
With the Champions League around the corner, Ancelotti is surely hoping that either Lunin or Courtois will be fit enough to step up when needed most.
