Real Madrid are preparing for a busy transfer window, with Arsenal defender William Saliba and goalkeeper David Raya reportedly on their radar.
According to The Sun, the Spanish club has identified Saliba as their top defensive target. The 24-year-old has become one of the most reliable players in Arsenal’s squad, playing every Premier League game last season and remaining a crucial figure throughout their current Champions League campaign.
Although Arsenal have no plans to sell and value Saliba at over £100 million, the French international has long admired Real Madrid, a factor that may influence any potential negotiations.
The interest doesn’t end there. Madrid are also said to be monitoring David Raya, Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper who joined permanently from Brentford for £27 million. With Thibaut Courtois now 33, the club is reportedly exploring long-term options between the posts. Raya, known for his distribution and command of the area, has caught their attention. However, Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen is also being considered as an alternative.
If signed, Verbruggen would likely start as backup to Courtois before transitioning into the primary role, while Raya may be expected to compete immediately. The competition for top talent at the position has reportedly prompted Brighton to look at Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher and Burnley’s James Trafford as possible replacements.
Madrid’s summer plans are further complicated by a shift in leadership. Carlo Ancelotti is expected to leave to manage the Brazil national team, making way for Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso. Alonso recently confirmed his departure from the Bundesliga club after a highly successful spell.
Speaking on his exit, Alonso said: “It is emotional… I spoke this morning with the players, the staff, so many people who have helped me during an unbelievable, fantastic three years.”
With changes on and off the pitch, Real Madrid appear set for a significant summer—both in terms of transfers and leadership.
