The Independent Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel of the Premier League has recently concluded its review concerning the red card issued to Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
This decision stemmed from an incident during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton on August 31, where referee Chris Kavanagh handed two yellow cards to Rice, resulting in his dismissal.
In the 49th minute of the match, Rice received his second yellow card after he seemingly kicked the ball while Brighton’s Joel Veltman attempted to execute a quick free-kick near the corner flag.
At that point, Arsenal was leading the game 1-0, thanks to an earlier goal from Kai Havertz.
However, after Rice’s sending off, Brighton equalized with a goal from Joao Pedro, showcasing the shifting momentum in the match.
In their statement, the KMI panel has backed Kavanagh’s decision to issue a red card, saying that the England International was aware of his actions.
They noted, “Rice knows what he’s doing – it’s a gentle touch, but once the referee sees it he has no choice.”
Consequently, Rice will serve a one-game suspension, impacting his availability for Arsenal’s upcoming North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.
