A 19-year-old man has been arrested for making death threats to Spain’s football captain Álvaro Morata and his family after his penalty miss against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final, IsaGoal can report.
According to ESPN, the arrest happened in Málaga, Spain, after the suspect confessed to sending the violent messages from his personal account.
Morata’s wife, Alice Campello, condemned the abuse on social media, sharing screenshots of the hateful threats aimed at their family after Spain’s defeat to Portugal in the penalty shootout on June 8.
Police revealed the man initially claimed his account had been hacked in an attempt to cover up his involvement.
“The inconsistencies in the complainant’s statement, who was seeking an alibi to cover up the fact that he was the author of the comments, as well as other checks carried out by cyber agents, ended up incriminating the suspect, who admitted to the facts,” the police said.
Morata, now on loan at Galatasaray from AC Milan, questioned his international future after his penalty was stopped by Portugal’s Diogo Costa.
“It’s possible I won’t be back in September [for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers],” Morata said after the match.
“I feel bad for my teammates, but it’s part of life. The penalty? I didn’t take it well, I could have done better, but there’s nothing I can do now.”
Morata has scored 37 goals in 86 appearances for Spain and led the team to win the 2023 Nations League and Euro 2024.
