A Real Oviedo supporter has been taken into custody in Spain after being accused of directing racist abuse at Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe during their La Liga meeting on August 24 — www.isagoal.com reports.
The arrest comes after investigators reviewed recordings where monkey chants and gestures were aimed at Mbappe in the 37th minute, shortly after he scored his first goal.
Spanish outlet Sport revealed police identified the individual following detailed analysis of video and audio evidence captured inside the Carlos Tartiere Stadium.
Real Oviedo president Martin Pelaez initially stated no significant findings had surfaced, but fresh evidence has now led to an arrest.
“The club is working fully with the authorities,” Pelaez confirmed when the investigation was first opened.
La Liga has escalated the matter to the Anti-Violence Committee, which is empowered to hand down additional sanctions.
The supporter could face a maximum punishment of three years in prison and fines reaching €650,000 if convicted, though past cases have often seen reduced penalties.
Earlier this year, Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months for racially abusing Vinicius Junior, marking the first prison ruling of its kind in Spanish football.
In another case, a supporter targeting Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams received a one-year sentence and a fine slightly above €1,000.
Spanish courts have begun issuing stronger rulings, but concerns persist over whether these punishments truly discourage racism in stadiums.
