Paul Scholes has expressed his frustration over Kobbie Mainoo’s omission from the England midfield at Euro 2024.
Despite a standout season at Manchester United, Mainoo has yet to feature in Gareth Southgate‘s plans, even as England’s midfield has struggled.
Scholes voiced his displeasure on Instagram, questioning the focus on “energy” over “the brain,” suggesting that Mainoo should be prioritized over Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, who is set to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold for England’s final group game against Slovenia today.
England, although progressing to the knockout stages, has faced criticism for their underwhelming performances, and Southgate’s team selections have been under scrutiny.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Scholes emphasized the potential impact Mainoo could have if given the chance in England’s midfield, comparing him to top players like Toni Kroos and Rodri.
Scholes stated, “If Kobbie Mainoo came in, all of a sudden you have control, you have a player who makes your team play football.
Sometimes it takes just one player to be able to do that.
You think of Toni Kroos with Germany, he just makes them play football.
Rodri with Man City and Spain.
I think Kobbie Mainoo has got the ability to do that and all of a sudden, that frees up the likes of Jude Bellingham.”
He believes that Mainoo’s inclusion could significantly improve the team’s performance.
A win against Slovenia would secure England the top spot in Group C and set up a knockout stage match against a third-ranked team from Group D, E, or F.
