Paul Merson has defended Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and other players who withdrew from England’s Nations League squad after Harry Kane expressed frustration over the number of absences.
Kane had voiced disappointment, suggesting some players had taken advantage of minor injuries and neglected the importance of representing their country.
Nine players, including Rice, Saka, and Cole Palmer, withdrew from the squad for England’s must-win games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland due to fitness concerns.
While Kane emphasized that England should always come before club commitments, Merson sympathized with the players who had genuine fitness issues, such as Saka, who limped off during Arsenal’s crucial match against Chelsea, and Rice, who was also struggling.
Merson also noted the interim nature of Lee Carsley’s tenure and the upcoming appointment of Thomas Tuchel, likely played a role in the withdrawals.
He suggested that players might have felt less urgency with Tuchel not yet in charge.
Merson also expressed confusion over why Carsley was still making squad decisions, given Tuchel’s confirmed appointment a month ago.
He argued that Tuchel should have more influence on squad selections, especially for such crucial matches.
Reflecting on Gareth Southgate’s reign, Merson praised his ability to ensure full commitment from players, something that seems to be lacking in the current situation.
Ultimately, Merson emphasized that playing for England should always be the pinnacle for any professional footballer.
