Barcelona’s hopes of signing Nico Williams have collapsed after the Spanish winger signed a long-term contract extension with Athletic Club, IsaGoal can report.
The 22-year-old, who had reportedly agreed to a six-year deal with FC Barcelona, performed a dramatic U-turn after delays over his La Liga registration stalled the deal, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Spanish media.
Instead, Nico has signed a fresh contract with Athletic Club, tying him to the Basque side until 2035.
As confirmed by Athletic, the release clause in Williams’ new deal has jumped by over 50%, rising to around €95–100 million—making him one of the most valuable players in La Liga.
Key to the decision was Athletic director Mikel Gonzalez, who once again convinced Williams to stay, reportedly flying to Germany during the Euros to secure the winger’s commitment—just as he did last summer.
Williams is also now believed to be the highest-paid player at Athletic Club, a factor that significantly swayed his decision to reject Barcelona’s second attempt to land him.
With the deal now off, Barcelona are turning to alternative winger targets.
Marcus Rashford of Manchester United and Luis Diaz of Liverpool are reportedly back on the radar as Xavi’s side search for firepower on the left flank.
Given the nature of this collapse, sources close to the club suggest Barcelona are unlikely to revisit interest in Nico Williams again in future transfer windows.
