Newcastle United are eyeing a £66 million move for Benjamin Sesko after missing out on Hugo Ekitike once again, IsaGoal can report.
As reported by The Athletic and TalkSPORT, Liverpool have now overtaken Newcastle in the race for Ekitike, who has made it clear that Anfield is his preferred destination.
This marks the third time the 23-year-old Frenchman has rejected a move to St James’ Park — a frustrating twist in Newcastle’s striker hunt.
Toon bosses are now shifting focus to RB Leipzig’s Sesko, a Slovenian forward who bagged 21 goals in all competitions last season.
Sesko has a £66 million release clause, slightly less than Newcastle’s recent £70m bid for Ekitike that was turned down.
Arsenal were also in the race but are now focusing on Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, clearing the path for Newcastle.
Sesko’s agent Elvis Basanovic added fuel to speculation, saying: “Sesko is not just a striker, he is a special striker… he’ll only join a special club with a special project and coach.”
Newcastle had also considered Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, but concerns over his age and AFCON participation make him a less attractive option.
Brentford are also unwilling to sell both Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, with Manchester United still chasing the latter in a separate £70m saga.
As Newcastle prepare for Champions League football, adding a powerful forward like Sesko would offer a sharp contrast to Alexander Isak’s style up front.
