Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has announced that Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich will take over as the national team captain.

Kimmich, who has consistently demonstrated leadership on and off the field, was called a “role model for the whole group” by Nagelsmann during a press conference.

The announcement was made ahead of Germany’s Nations League fixture against Hungary in Düsseldorf on Saturday.

Nagelsmann also named Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz as alternate captains.

Kimmich has been Germany’s vice-captain since September 2023 under former coach Hansi Flick and he is the most experienced players on the team with 91 international caps.

Kimmich has a reputation for his tireless work ethic and commitment to the game. “He always gives his all, he always wants to train, sometimes too much, he is never tired, he always wants to win,” Nagelsmann said.

Starting his career in the Stuttgart youth system alongside national team colleagues Serge Gnabry and Timo Werner, Kimmich transitioned through RB Leipzig before joining Bayern Munich in 2015.

His versatility has often seen him deployed as a right-back, although he prefers playing in midfield.

After their match against Hungary, the Germany team will travel to Amsterdam to face the Netherlands on September 10.

Kimmich’s leadership will be crucial as the team looks to forge ahead in the Nations League and build momentum for future competitions.
