Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho has been handed a four-match suspension and fined 1.6 million Turkish lira ($44,000) by the Turkish Football Federation for his criticism of local referees following a goalless draw against Galatasaray.
The Portuguese tactician, 62, praised Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić for officiating the match but took a jab at Turkish officials, stating the game would have been a “disaster” under their watch.
His comments, deemed derogatory and inflammatory, led to disciplinary action for allegedly inciting disorder in Turkish football.
Mourinho has already missed one match, sitting out Fenerbahçe’s Turkish Cup victory over Gaziantep. The club has appealed the ban, which, if upheld, will see him absent for three more domestic fixtures.
Fenerbahçe defended their coach, arguing his remarks were misrepresented.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba voiced support, asserting Mourinho’s history disproves any allegations of bias.
