Lionel Messi’s historic run of multi-goal games in Major League Soccer came to an abrupt end on Wednesday night as Inter Miami suffered a 3-0 defeat away to FC Cincinnati.

The 38-year-old Argentine icon had scored two goals in five consecutive matches, a feat he hadn’t accomplished since his Barcelona days in 2012.

That red-hot form powered Inter Miami to four wins and a draw, with Messi tallying 16 goals so far this season.

But at TQL Stadium, Cincinnati shut down Miami’s attack, limiting them to just two shots on target.

“Clearly today we were outplayed from the beginning of the match,” Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano admitted post-match. “We weren’t fresh or lucid, and they beat us very well.”

Cincinnati’s 20-year-old American midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela opened the scoring in the 16th minute, while Brazilian forward Evander added a brace in the 50th and 70th minutes to seal a commanding victory.

Mascherano also confirmed that Messi took a knock late in the game, though he was able to finish the match without further issues.

The loss drops Miami to 11-4-5 with 38 points, now fifth in the Eastern Conference and eight points behind league leaders Philadelphia.

Miami do have three games in hand, but would need to win them all to stay in the race for the MLS Shield.

Next up for Messi and Miami is a visit to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, who are coming off a 5-3 win over New England.
