Manchester United are preparing for a difficult summer transfer window after a Europa League final defeat left them nursing a massive financial shortfall.
According to The i Paper, the loss to Tottenham Hotspur not only denied United a trophy but also cost them an estimated £100m in lost Champions League revenue. This figure includes missed opportunities in TV rights, matchday income, and potential commercial partnerships.
Football finance expert Professor Rob Wilson stated, “An extra £100m in revenue allows you to spend £400m or £500m on new players when you amortise those deals over the length of their contracts. That is gone now.”
Despite the setback, head coach Ruben Amorim has the full backing of senior figures at the club, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe and chief executive Omar Berrada. Amorim remains committed, although his post-match comments about possibly leaving if not supported raised some eyebrows.
The financial blow will impact United’s ambitions in the transfer market. While the club is finalizing a £62.5m move for Matheus Cunha, other targets such as Liam Delap are being pursued with careful attention to cost. Delap reportedly prefers United over Chelsea, despite the lack of Champions League football.
United will need to generate funds through player sales. Marcus Rashford is of interest to Barcelona, and Antony’s successful loan spell at Real Betis is expected to attract bids. The club hopes to secure around £40m from Antony’s sale. Jadon Sancho is also expected to move on, while a sell-on clause from Alvaro Fernandez’s potential transfer could provide up to £20m.
While Amorim remains safe in his role for now, Manchester United’s transfer strategy will need to be sharper and more financially disciplined than ever. Competing against clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal without the Champions League draw means higher wage offers and transfer fees may be necessary to seal deals.
