Manchester United are set to play a clever hand in the transfer market by stepping in to facilitate a high-value move for Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras — with a smart financial twist.
According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid are targeting the young left-back but are reluctant to meet Benfica’s €50 million release clause. Manchester United, who originally sold Carreras to the Portuguese side, still hold an €18 million buy-back clause — and now appear ready to use it to engineer a profitable outcome for themselves and assist the Spanish giants.
The proposed structure is straightforward: United activate the €18 million clause, regain the player, and then sell him to Madrid for €35 million. This saves Real Madrid €15 million and earns United a healthy €17 million return.
However, the deal won’t move forward until after May 25, when Carreras is expected to feature for Benfica in their domestic cup final.
This move could significantly boost Manchester United’s summer transfer budget. With their Premier League season faltering and manager Ruben Amorim under pressure, the Red Devils are now focused on their Europa League final clash against Tottenham — a match that could still secure Champions League qualification.
Speaking after a recent league loss to Chelsea, Amorim emphasized the importance of moving forward:
“We know that we are in a season where we’ve struggled a lot. We cannot do nothing about that. That is in the past. We need to look at the present.”
As United prepare for a pivotal few weeks, the club’s tactical transfer maneuver involving Carreras could prove to be a crucial piece of their off-season strategy — financially and competitively.
