Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is currently facing a significant suspension as the FA concludes an investigation into his conduct.
This decision leaves Ange Postecoglou’s squad without the talented Uruguay midfielder, who has become an essential part of the team this season.
According to reports, Bentancur allegedly made a racist remark towards South Koreans during an interview on Uruguayan television.
The FA has charged him for an ‘aggravated breach’ of their rules, which could see him sidelined for as many as seven games.
The incident has placed Bentancur in an awkward position, especially given that Tottenham’s captain, Heung-Min Son, is South Korean.
Son has since revealed that Bentancur was deeply apologetic, almost in tears when he privately apologized to him.
Speaking in September, Son expressed his love and support for Bentancur, acknowledging the midfielder’s genuine regret. “He knew he made a mistake, but I have no problem with him,” Son said, adding that they have moved past the issue as teammates and friends.
Bentancur also issued a public apology through social media.
Tottenham has supported the midfielder, emphasizing their commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion.
The club announced plans to provide further education for players to prevent similar incidents in the future.
They also reaffirmed their stance that discrimination has no place at the club or in football.
