Chelsea are actively considering a move for AC Milan’s first-choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but the club faces a major hurdle over his transfer valuation, according to ESPN.
The 29-year-old France international has emerged as a top target for the London side, who were encouraged after learning he is open to a Premier League switch.
With just one year left on his current deal, Chelsea hoped Milan would be open to negotiating a lower fee. But the Serie A side are holding firm, reportedly demanding around €30 million ($34m), a figure Chelsea are unwilling to match.
Chelsea’s Goalkeeper Situation Complicates Transfer Talks
Chelsea’s hesitation stems not only from Milan’s valuation but also from the club’s current squad depth in goal. Despite their interest in Mike Maignan, the Blues are not prioritising the position in this window.
They currently have five senior goalkeepers under contract, including new signing Filip Jørgensen and Genk’s Mike Penders, who is set to join the squad this summer.
One source noted: “While the club are open to signing a new goalkeeper, it is not a position they are prioritising.”
Penders may be loaned out, following a similar path to Djordje Petrovic, while Kepa Arrizabalaga is expected to return from his stint at Bournemouth. Additionally, Robert Sánchez’s position as a reliable option has come into question after several high-profile errors.
Maignan’s Experience Adds Appeal, but Price Remains Sticking Point
Mike Maignan, France’s current number one, has been Milan’s top choice since joining from Lille in 2021. He’s featured in Champions League campaigns for four consecutive seasons, adding international pedigree and experience to his résumé.
Despite this, Chelsea remain cautious about spending heavily on a player who could be signed for free next summer.
The negotiations are ongoing, and while Chelsea maintain interest, the two clubs remain far apart on a final fee. Milan’s current stance may shift as the summer window progresses, especially if Maignan shows no intention of renewing his contract.
