Uruguayan football icon Luis Suarez announced his retirement from international football, confirming that Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Paraguay in Montevideo will be his final match.

Suarez will end a remarkable 17-year career with Uruguay as their top scorer, having netted 69 goals in 142 appearances.

Suarez made his international debut in 2007 and played a crucial role in Uruguay’s success, including reaching the 2010 World Cup semi-finals and winning the 2011 Copa America, where he was named player of the tournament.

Despite disciplinary issues, including the infamous biting incident in the 2014 World Cup, his on-field contributions are undeniable.

Suarez highlighted his desire to end his international career on his own terms, saying, “The fact that it is my decision to retire and not due to injuries or being sidelined gives me a lot of comfort.”

As Suarez prepares to bid farewell, he aims to share this momentous occasion with his children and the fans at his home stadium.

“I want my children to live this experience. Saying goodbye with the people here is something that I don’t know if many have done,” he noted.
