Liverpool are set to challenge Chelsea in the race to sign Belgian forward Malick Fofana, IsaGoal can report.

As shared by the Mirror, Liverpool have opened discussions with Roc Nation, the agency managing Fofana, while Chelsea have already made direct contact with Lyon regarding the player.

French outlet L’Equipe also reports that Nottingham Forest are keeping a close eye on Fofana’s situation as interest from several clubs grows.

Liverpool’s transfer window has been very active so far, with the club securing Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million and closing in on a British-record £116 million deal for Florian Wirtz.

The Reds are also expected to finalise the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a deal worth around £45 million.

With Napoli pushing hard to sign Darwin Nunez, Liverpool’s need for a new striker has become a major focus.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is now considering Newcastle’s Alexander Isak as a top option to replace Nunez.

There are also concerns at Anfield about the futures of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Federico Chiesa, which could lead to more attacking signings.

Fofana impressed last season, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists across all competitions.

Lyon are open to selling Fofana after missing out on Champions League qualification and have set a price tag of £43 million.

This fee is slightly higher than the £34 million Manchester City paid for Rayan Cherki.

Fofana’s agent recently said the forward has a “choice of heart,” but no deal has yet been agreed.
