Alisson Becker remains Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, but changes in the squad open the door for new arrivals to step up next season.
There’s no football role quite like that of the number two goalkeeper—especially when the number one is arguably the best in the world.
That’s been the reality at Liverpool since Alisson Becker joined from Roma in 2018, quickly establishing himself among the club’s greatest-ever goalkeepers.
Given Liverpool’s rich history, including legends like Ray Clemence and Elisha Scott, such a comparison is not made lightly.
Alisson’s Future Still Secure for Now
Alisson has one year remaining on his current Liverpool deal, with the club almost certain to activate their option to extend for another season. At 32, the Brazilian recently said his focus is on playing rather than planning his next move, especially with the World Cup on the horizon.
However, changes are unfolding behind him.
Caoimhin Kelleher, Alisson’s long-serving deputy, has left to become Brentford’s new number one in an £18 million deal. Meanwhile, Ajax—now led by former Liverpool assistant John Heitinga—are keen to sign 23-year-old Vitezslav Jaros on loan.
Liverpool’s Goalkeeper Reshuffle
Liverpool’s planning for the future is already underway. Giorgi Mamardashvili will join the squad this summer following last year’s £29 million agreement with Valencia. The Reds also completed the signing of 20-year-old Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia in a £1.5 million deal over the weekend.
Pecsi will train with the first team but is expected to start with the under-21s. Harvey Davies, the 21-year-old homegrown goalkeeper, is set to sign a new contract before heading out on loan, potentially making room for Pecsi to rise to third choice.
Mamardashvili has made it clear he is ready to compete with Alisson for the number one spot, but there’s little doubt Arne Slot will stick with the Brazilian when the new season kicks off.
Recent seasons suggest that patience will pay off for those behind Alisson, offering opportunities for silverware and key appearances.
Liverpool’s Backup Goalkeepers Have Stepped Up
Adrian made just 26 appearances in five years at Liverpool, but those included starting the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final win over Chelsea and contributing during the club’s 2020 Premier League title-winning campaign. He was also part of the squad that won the 2024 League Cup.
Kelleher, meanwhile, featured in the Champions League final squad against Tottenham in 2019, played key roles in both League Cup final wins over Chelsea in 2022 and 2024, and was on the bench for the FA Cup final win in 2022. He made 10 Premier League appearances this past season as Liverpool claimed a record-equalling 20th title, taking his total to 67 games for the Reds—46 of which came in the last two injury-hit seasons for Alisson.
Jaros made his Liverpool debut this season when he replaced an ill Kelleher during the win over Crystal Palace. He later started in the League Cup victory at Brighton.
Even in Alisson’s debut season, Simon Mignolet made two appearances and was on the bench for the Champions League final win over Tottenham.
In total, Liverpool’s backup goalkeepers have played 97 matches over the last seven years, regularly stepping up when needed and collecting multiple winners’ medals.
Liverpool’s Long-Term Goalkeeper Succession Plan
Alisson’s time at Liverpool will likely span nine years by the end of his contract, a significant tenure for a modern goalkeeper. For comparison, Peter Schmeichel spent eight years at Manchester United, Petr Cech had 11 at Chelsea, and Ederson has been at Manchester City for eight years so far.
While Alisson’s position remains secure, Liverpool’s evolving goalkeeper setup signals preparation for life after their Brazilian number one. The next in line will now aim to prove they can eventually succeed him—and perhaps claim their share of trophies along the way.
