AS Roma has successfully signed Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk from Spanish club Girona for a reported fee of €30.5 million (£26m).

The fee is expected to rise to €37m (£31.5m) based on performance-related add-ons.

Before finalizing his move to Roma, Dovbyk was strongly linked with a transfer to other top European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid.

Atlético Madrid, in particular, who is in search of a striker after Alvaro Morata’s move to AC Milan.

Reports indicate that the Ukranian gave up over €1m of his own money to expedite the transfer.

He had a clause with Girona that entitled him to €1.5m in the event of a sale but waived it to facilitate the move.

Dovbyk joined Girona last summer from SK Dnipro for less than £7m and quickly made his mark in La Liga finishing as the league’s top goalscorer with 24 goals and eight assists in 36 matches.

His stellar performance played a critical role in helping Girona secure a third-place finish in La Liga, thus qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.

The 27-year-old will wear the no.11 jersey at Roma and becomes the first player from Ukraine to join the club.

He will join Roma’s squad for a pre-season tour in England, where they will face Coventry City and Everton.
